Legislative Attack on Connecticut’s Catholic Church Poses Threat to All Churches

Legislative Attack on Connecticut’s Catholic Church Poses Threat to All Churches (http://www.kofc.org/un/eb/en/news/legislative/detail/548358.html - broken link)
“This legislation violates both the First Amendment, by intervening in the internal affairs of the Church, and the Fourteenth Amendment because it singles out the Catholic Church for discriminatory treatment. Moreover, it will chill freedom of religion and free speech, because it sends a message to all religious leaders that they will now have to consider whether what they say will subject them to government interference and intimidation,” Anderson explained.

“The power to impose structures that grant or take away authority of church leaders at the discretion of government officials is the power to intimidate and ultimately to destroy,” Anderson concluded.
There is a rally at the state capital today March 11th at 12pm. If you can't go, write or call your representative. Regardless if you are religious or not, we can not allow government to shred the constitution like this as it will affect us all in one way or another. Get involved.

I think this thread deserves to stay in the Ct forum as it affects the residents here.

Personally, I am Christian but not Catholic, and I don't feel the government has any place legislating religion. Any religion. And there are more good Catholics than bad.

I just downloaded and read the bill. The only thing that does sound wrong to me is the mention of the Catholic Church specifically which I think should be taken out. Otherwise, the bill is about registering as a corporation.

The bill was dropped. Apparently it was designed to protect parishioners after a Darien priest embezzled over a million dollars from parishioners. If Catholic parishioners don't mind having no knowledge of where their money is going though, it's their business. I am at a loss as to why the government wants to get involved. Still, I'm not worked up enough over it to take any kind of action.

After I posted, I saw Hollytree's post. If that's really all the bill does, it doesn't sound as alarming as it's made out to be. I agree they shouldn't use wording that singles out any particular church.

So much for not bashing the church. Its a moot point since the bill is dead.

What disgusts me is how some people think their church or religion is better than others. Learn some tolerance. Just because I am catholic doesn't mean that I support stealing or anything else you reference. Are you "more" christian than I?? Oh wait, apparently I am an insult to "true christians" so never mind. I can't believe the mods left your comment up.

I have recieved a couple of requests to have this thread moved to the Religion Thread. Since this is a Connecticut issue, I am leaving it here. Also note that I did remove an insulting post from the thread. Please watch what you say or I will close this post down. Thank you, JayCT, Moderator

Too funny, removing the insulting post leaves no context for my following post or UConn97's! Now, we just look like some heretics!
