Thanks for all the help on previous posts. I think we are going to rent a standalone house in Westport or Fairfield. However, I have no idea how much to subtract from my budget for the costs of living in a home: heat, electricity, lawncare, trash pick up, water, sewer, etc. Could anyone give a guideline? Thanks.
If you are renting, be sure that each of these items is addressed in the lease agreement. For instance, some landlords might drop the rental amount if you take care of lawn maintenance and/or snow removal.
For utilities such as phone, cable, and electric, these will be yours to pay. Also, since it's a stand-alone house, you will probably have to take care of heat, water, and sewer.
Trash pick-up might be included as part of the property taxes paid by the owner. This is the case in my town.
Without knowing the size of the house, it's not easy to determine heat or electric.
Thanks. I'm looking in Westport at ~1300 square foot houses. It seems like most of the rental listings are pretty much net leases. Owner pays property tax, we would pay everything else.
