Is there a town other than West Hartford? My husband's work is moving to Stamford. We currently live in Chicago, and share a car. We would LOVE to find a good walkable town.

Stamford itself has some decent walkable neighborhoods. You would still need a car to do most of your shopping though. The city is very nice, but expensive, and under an hour to NYC.

There are many great walkable towns around Stamford. Most of the towns along the coast in Fairfield county have walkable downtown areas. If you provide more information on what you are looking for, we can help you naarrow down the choices. Jay

I guess if we could find the place of our dreams it would not be a bad commute to work, we could stay a one car family, the town would have good school systems (our baby is 14 months), the people would be awesome, and I could find other moms and babies to do things with during the day. We will be renting, for now.

Most of the towns in lower Fairfield County have some sort of walkable downtown area. Westport, Darien and New Canaan all have vibrant town centers - each with storefronts that provide dining and shopping (as well as professional services - law offices, banks, firms, etc.) All have populations between 20,000 and 25,000, and they're all incredibly pricy - meaning the average house price is over $1 million. There, however, plenty of smaller, starter homes for sale in these towns that are well below that price. Each of these towns has a few houses for rent, but they, too, are expensive. Still, they're very close to Stamford and the schools are excellent.

I wouldn't rule out living Stamford since many of the neighborhoods are walkable (though the residential properties in or near downtown are mostly apartments, condos or co-ops) and it's a very safe city, but the schools won't be quite up to par with the other towns mentioned earlier.

FLASHcard-most towns in ffld county are commutable to stamford by train so you can stay a one car family I have a friend who has been able to stay a one car family since they moved here from NYC a few years ago. Her husband takes the train and they live within a mile or so of the station.

I would recommend Stamford if you want to be right in the heart of it. New Canaan also has a really nice down town area as does Fairfield. My favorite for you given the information you said is Fairfield, a great down town, convienent train station and lots of Moms that you can meet up with. If your husband takes the train it's only about a half hour. Good luck!

Bethel has a great walkable downtown. It's home prices are reasonable for Fairfield county, and has great train service into the city.
