My g/f is currently going to school for education here in Orlando. She wants to be a art or history teacher. Whats the best route for acomplishing this in connecticut. I can't find a school that offers a BA in Secondary Education/art or Secondary Education: History. Any Advice? Also are Art teachers or history teachers in demand in ct? Particularly Hartford?

Central CT State University (Central Connecticut State University) has a HUGE education program. It offers both of those specific concentrations, but there is a lot of competition to get into the education program; as a transfer she would have a better shot than a freshman, though. CCSU is in New Britain, which is 10-15 minutes from Hartford.

Unfortunately Teachers in CT in general are NOT in demand. This is because we are in the midst of a 9 billion dollar budget shortfall. I believe their is a hiring freeze and the Unions are in talks to try to minimize state worker layoffs. The chances that you will be getting a teaching position in CT is very uncertain. Also in terms of teacher demand - science and math high school teachers are in demand. Elementary, history and english are in significantly less demand. On the upside teachers in CT make a lot more then FL. There is something called the Best Program that you must complete to get certified in CT. You also need a masters, but I think you can get it while on the job.

Welcome - CT BEST Program (http://www.ctbest.org/ - broken link)

From what I'm hearing, it depends on the subject area. There is still a shortage in mathematics and other areas. A 3rd grade teacher subject to a layoff isn't necessarily going to get the 9th grade math teacher position regardless of the Union's input.

Thanks Heather; I've took a look at Central and I think thats what our plan is going to be. I know uconn has one of the best education programs but my g/f isn't the best student and uconn's education program looks way too competitive for her.

Thank you guys for your suggessions; I'll look into the Best program and the Alternative route.

While I see that teachers aren't really in demand in CT I have to believe her options are better there than here in florida. Just in orlando their closing 4 schools and merging the students into other schools. The teachers that got to keep their jobs will have a huge class of kids. And get paid crap ontop of that.

I noticed some grants for minority teachers in connecticut; so... thats a plus too.
