I am currently living in Georgia and are relocating to Stamford Ct with my spouse and elementary school children. My husband will be working in white plains. Can anyone tell me about the area and schools? I am attracted to Stamford because of its diversity.

I live in Stamford. The city is safe overall, growing somewhat quickly (for CT standards--NOT anything like Atlanta or Phoenix, etc.), and has a huge, high-paying corporate presence downtown. The downtown has the Trump condos coming in, the mall is adding a huge outdoor shopping wing, and the Ritz-Carlton is building condos/hotel downtown. Also, the south end waterfront has been completely rezoned, and a live/work/play area is in the proposed/planning stages. Whatever your budget is, puts you in a different area of Stamford (obviously), but the city is becoming somewhat "Manhattanized"--meaning the gap between the well-off/rich and poor is becoming wider. The middle class is being pushed up north to the Bridgeport, CT suburbs of Fairfield, Stratford, and Trumball. Stamford is a unique city (especially to me since I grew up in TN) in that it does not have a lot of chain or franchise stores relative to its population size. Also, most shopping, dining, and entertainment are either downtown or being built downtown. There is not a Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Kohls, and a huge strip with a ton of tacky/bright fast food restaurants. The entire city has just 1 or 2 Burger Kings, and 1 or 2 McDonalds. By comparison, my hometown in TN (Kingsport) has 44,000 people, and there are 7 McDonalds. Anyway, just a small bit of info to give you a glimpse of the town. Nice people here, and a very small-town feel with a big-city look downtown.

Have you checked out Greenwich? It's a bit more expensive, but 10 mins closer to White Plains with among the best public schools in the country. Just a thought.

White Pains? Look further North toward Ridgefield, CT or North Salem, NY.
Beautiful countryside. Easy 30-35 minute ride on 684 to White Plains.
Are you seeking cultural diversity or demographic diversity? Cultural diversity in language, food, music and arts all available here. Demographic diversity in terms of ethnic backgrounds? Fewer African Americans and Hispanic Americans, but more minority families are upwardly mobile and are heading this way.

Thanks for all the help I found out some things about Stamford seem like a nice town. I will be relocating next week and are going to rent first. Greenwich is to expensive compare to Stamford. My kids will be in the magnet program.

Glenbrook is a cute neighborhood. Very nice "old school '50s style" downtown area. Train station is super convenient too. Welcome to the area!
