My family is currently exploring the possibility of moving to Western Connecticut from California. We want to see what the salaries would be and if there are many job opportunities. My husband is currently a senior software engineer for a biotech company. Does anyone know of any headhunters who specialize in software engineers/IT in Conneticut or NYC? Are there many biotech companies in Connecticut? I heard that a lot of companies moved from NYC to Stamford after 9/11.

Thanks for your help.

there's a zillion recruiting firms out there that specialize in IT job placement but not necessarily by industry. plus there's a lot of overlap as far as the jobs they have reqs for. that is companies will send out the same job req to multiple firms.
i think your best bet is to check out CareerBuilder.com Jobs - The Largest Job Search, Employment & Careers Site . hover the mouse over the Find Jobs menu and select 'Search by Industry'. Biotechnology is listed there. you can search by industry on Monster as well.

Regarding your comment about NYC companies moving to Stamford after 9/11, I think what is more accurate is that some companies decentralized a bit and put some of their offices in Stamford.

The real NYC-to-Stamford growth occurred in the late 70s thru late 80s. At once time CT had no state income tax and many NYC executives moved to southwest Fairfield County. In time many of the NYC firms these CEOs ran moved to Stamford (as well as other parts of Fairfield Co) so the CEOs could have much easier commutes. But nowadays the tax advantage vs. NY is small and I-95 is as crowded as an LA freeway during rush hour. So you don't see a huge rush of NYC firms moving into CT anymore.

looking on CB and Monster myself, i noticed that when you select an Industry, you can only select one. that is, there doesn't seem to be a way to cross ref 2 or more industries (IT and Biotech in this case). they are mutually exclusive. that's whats tricky about IT - almost all companies have some IT dept no matter what industry they specialize in (banks, ins co's all have IT depts) so for IT, you have to select Computer Software (or whatever) as the industry to get a list of IT jobs.
but at least in CB, you can select an industry (Biotech) and have it return a list of companies within that industry that have openings. from there you can do research on the companies themselves (go to their website, call them, etc). hope i explained this right.
