We have been looking at houses in north branford, durham, ct areas. One house that we recently had seen had a full in-law apartment in the lower section of house, complete with kitchen, separate entrance, laundry.

I dont know much about this...but I was wondering if this is legal because I have heard that if it is not then you have to remove it. Would this concern surface in the inspection process?

Also, if it is legal then is it something that I could rent to a single person legally in the future or does it have to be a blood relative?

Thank you

Check with each specific town's building department and zoning department, as they all have different ordinances and rules. They'll be able to give you information on the property and whether or not the unit is legal. They'll also be able to give you specifics on who can reside in the unit if it is indeed legal. Some towns allow it only to be a blood relative, some towns allow it to be an unrelated individual. It really all depends on the specific town's rules and regs.
