Yes, the Route 44 crossing over Avon Mountain is not good. It could be raining on the West Hartford side and snowing or iceing on the Avon side. The steep grade of Route 44 is very dangerous. 15 years ago my wife was in a rear-end accident in the same spot that the deadly truck accident occurred and that is one of the big reasons why we did not move out to the Farmington Valley. She HATED the mountain. As JViello pointed out, there are a couple of ways around the mountain but they are not direct and usually very congested. To ConnDOT's credit, they have been trying for years to make improvements to access the Farmington Valley but have been met with VERY strong resistance to changes. Some people like the area because it is so isolated. We did not. Jay
