Now with the cost of housing in Boston so high, Providence became a low-priced option. This caused the previously low-cost Providence housing market to surge. Rhode Island for many years enjoyed some of the biggest jumps in housing prices in the country because of it. Jay
So before then where did all these Bostonians live?
See when people talk about migration or an area being discovered, like Providence, the question I have is, where did they come from and what happened to their old dwellings?
Did they become abandoned, were these people who couldn't homes, lived in apartments, which now are home to immigrants?

Why in the mid 80s did this begin and how come it still seems areas inside 495 haven't been discovered or even NE CT when it is 50 miles or closer?

25 or 30 years ago Providence was in worse shape then Hartford was 10 years ago. No proper Bostonian would consider it.

Today the city has been completely transformed. There is Providence Place, The Riverwalk, and the historic district is one of the best in the country. There is still new building going on in the city center. Providence has always had Brown and RSDI near downtown, which today adds to the city's vigor.

There are great clubs and restaurants additionally.
As Providence became more attractive, and Bostons housing cost skyrocketed, the city became an attractive alternative. And the 30-35 mile commute one way doable.

Another one bites the dust. It seems all my research on the quiet corner has been in vain. Didn't get the position in CT after all. I am 0-3 for positions I have applied for in New England.

I have no idea what your line of work is- however try the greater Hartford area- for employment- you could still easily commute from towns like Coventry and Willington a short drive away.
