I'm going to be needing a 2br apartment in Downtown Stamford within the next month. I know there are a bunch of complexes, but it's hard to find decent reviews and prices. The budget is going to be $900/pp max, including utilities. I'm not afraid to negotiate either, but I'm not sure if the bigger complexes will even entertain negotiations. My only real restriction is that it needs to be cat friendly, and I need covered parking (motorcycle and a car - want to keep both covered but will not leave bike uncovered).

Does anyone have good experience with any of the complexes in the area?

I am not sure if you can find what you are looking for in Stamford for that rent. Seems kind of low for 2 bedrooms with parking and utilities even in other parts of Connecticut. Jay

I've seen some options on Craigslist within this range and in this area. Actually a lot more than I expected. I just don't have much experience with the bigger complexes, and am trying to decide if they would be better or worse.

BTW, by downtown, I don't mean it has to be within 2 blocks of the bar strip. Basically within a mile or so. Just not as far as up by the merritt or over near glenbrook/springdale. I'm not against the lower strawberry hill area. I may look at the avalon glen, but they charge a $500 non-refundable deposit + $50/mo per pet, which I think is absurd for a cat. I may see how they are otherwise and try to negotiate out that extra charge. I can see it for a big dog, but to generalize all pets is foolish. Especially bc other avalons dont seem to have these same fees

I thought the Avalons started at $2000 for 2 bedrooms. ParcGrove looks completely rundown on the inside, Avalon is nice, but cookie cutter. I agree with the other poster, $1800 for a 2br in a complex will be difficult, but as the economy continues to tank the rents will come down.

I just called Avalon Glen just to see what they say.

Wow they nickle and dime you. Cheapest place they offered (2br) was $1665. Add every utility on top (gas, electric, water, heat, garbage). You only get 1 parking spot, so you need to buy another for ~$100. Pets are $500 non-refundable + $50/mo .. for a cat!

I gave up trying to count up everything they bill you on.

I saw a few places yesterday with my realtor. Some were nice, but nothing really jumped and grabbed me. Can anyone recommend places to look that are NOT listed on the MLS? I'm checking craigslist, but there are a lot of apartment complexes I feel like that the MLS did not pull.

You might want to look at the Stamford Advocate (the local paper). Good luck

Be sure to actually visit a place before you decide. $900 for a 2 bdrm in downtown Stamford is a Very tight budget - there are some dicey areas, especially around exit 6, so if you see a place online that seems too good to be true, it probably is. Everyone I know who lived in a decently nice place in Stamford paid 1000-1200 for a 1 bedroom.

$900 pp? Per person? Are you splitting it in half? If so, $1800 is doable. With utilities? Tough. Won't be the nicest place, but talk to a realtor - they'll help you out.

If you're trying to get a 2BR for $900 with utilities, forget about it. Not going to happen. You'd have to move an hour away for that.

I'm going to say that $900/person in Stamford is not doable unless you're okay with living in one of the sketchier parts of downtown. You are going to have to expand where you are looking. If you have a car, this should be okay. There are always a few "gems in the rough" on Craigslist and you may be able to find a 2BR $1800/month WITH utilities location in non-downtown Stamford or even Greenwich. Take a look at realtor.com rentals in Stamford with a price limit of $1800, too. A quick search showed approx. 25 listings for 2BR in your price range, though most are located in homes, condos, or townhouses.
