I'm supposed to be flying into LGA on Saturday and am a little worried about the weather forecast. I've been checking accuweather and weather.com but they don't seem to know where the storm will go. Can anyone tell me what Dr Mel and Brad Field are saying? Is it supposed to get pretty bad in W. CT and NY if it continues on the Eastern New England track? In NYC it says rain showers, but I'd assume bands of rain and wind would cause flights to be delayed?

I only ask because I have the option to change my flight to Sunday for 30 bucks. Not sure if I should do that, or risk being stuck in an airport all night or on a tarmac at Dulles, lol.

Last local reports were just having the rain, possible wind brushing the eastern sections of CT. Right now it doesn't sound too bad.

They have a 70-80 chance of showers and heavy rains from Friday night to Sunday morning.

The Atlantic Ocean is warming rapidly under the hot and humid weather we have had in the past weeks. Additionally, the unusual position of the Bermuda High this year (north, but further east)…seems to be pushing warmer water faster (on its western side) along the Atlantic Coast. Normally, more of the warmer water would be drawn more out into mid-ocean, not this year however. This increases the hurricane threat along in the middle Atlantic States/ East Coast…since any hurricane that moves along the Atlantic Coast will have little cooler water to weaken it.

* As you can see by the current map……the Atlantic has now reached 72 F (22 C) right to the south shore of Long Island, NY (right now the Central Long Island Sound buoy off Connecticut… is reporting 72 F)...and 76 F (24 C) ocean waters have now reached southern New Jersey, while the Atlantic off Maryland and Virginia is 78 F.

* There is now a growing area of the Atlantic Ocean from Florida to North Carolina that has 84 –85 (28 C) ocean temperatures. For comparison with the West Coast…right now the Pacific off Oahu Island (Hawaii) is 81 F…the Pacific off Guam is 81.7 F and the Pacific off Santa Monica, CA (LA) is 68 F.

Since it’s only late July…the Atlantic will continue to warm until early September. Atlantic Ocean temps from Florida to North Carolina could reach 88 F or higher. I think we have a good chance of seeing 80 F Atlantic Ocean temps touch the south Jersey shore, while the Atlantic could reach 76 F right up to Long Island/Connecticut. The water is still fairly cool from Massachusetts northward right now however (sub 65 F).

It’s great for beach people…as the Atlantic surf in places like NJ are warmer than the Pacific off San Diego or LA, while places as close as Myrtle Beach, SC have warmer surf than Hawaii (lol). The down side…. is what happens if an area of disturbed weather east of the Bahamas gets organized and heads toward the United States.

good guess...there is NO sure way to know what the next 2 months hold for hurricane season. If you are right you will be thumping the old chest...wrong and its slip away like so many hurricane predictors...It is a crapshoot. One of my best laughs is when the yearly hurricane predictions come out.

Can't help you with your immediate problem, but the one thing that is always true is that the three NYC area airports are just about the worst in the US when it comes to weather delays.

A couple of years ago, I had to travel to North Carolina; I made sure that I chose a flight that did not go through NYC as a connection, just because I did not want to have weather screw up my travel plans. My flight (slightly less than the most convenient and not the cheapest) connected through Dulles. I figured the slight increase in ticket price was worth it, since I would not have to be concerned with the notorious NYC airport slowdowns.

Just sayin' ...

Most airlines will allow a free change of flight if there is a threat of bad weather. They would rather have you get to the destination then be stranded somewhere.

Hey thanks guys. We actually switched our flight to tomorrow night because they offered to do it for free. It looks like the TS is heading east, with minimal effects in western CT.

I travel extensively and the airports I always seem to have the most problems with are Newark, O'Hare and Atlanta. JFK and LGA are often problematic too. I usually try to choose direct flights but this time we chose a connecting flight to save a couple bucks.

Made it back. Took an evening flight, it was bumpy but not too bad. Not many delays until we hit 95 in CT (parking lot as soon as we hit Greenwich). Looks like our friend Danny decided to depart early.

Man, I miss this weather. I really do.

Actually Danny is still in NC (or more accurately, just offshore of the Outer Banks). It is further west than expected, but it has weakened below tropical storm strength, so now they think it will go extratropical right away and quickly brush by Montauk and Cape Cod and basically be a rainstorm.

Stopped by Shippan Point this afternoon. The water seems much warmer than normal...no? Or have I just gotten used to the freezing Pacific temperature off of Santa Barbara?
