Unfortunately, not that I have ever seen from the ferry. It's a very nice ride, but the route seems to be too far east for the types of views you describe.

It's probably too far. About 15 years ago I went with my dad on a chartered fishing boat that took off from New Rochelle, NY and fished for porgies in the Sound. It went out as far as Stamford and from there you could see the skyline, but it was an unusually clear day and still it was somewhat small/faint.

If you go down to Greenwich, there is a park (I forget the name, but I think its at Tods Point Road), that takes you out to a point on the shore where you get a real great view like that, you not only see the skyline, but a small/faint Whitestone and Throgs Neck Bridge and the new small skyline of New Rochelle.

But go between November and April when it's free, it's phenomally expensive (like about $50 for a car of 4) if you don't live in Greenwich and go "in season".
