Hi,

I just read the article in the courant about the front street development in downtown Hartford by the convention center. Why did it take 10 years to get going? The article didn't seem to fully explain, just that there were issues getting tenants.

Well...it all started with the witch hunt for John Rowland and went downhill from there.

The disfunction of Hartford and state politics got in the way. That's a very very short version but in the end, that's where the compass points.

and even after all that time, it still took forever to actually start constructing something. the process of decontaminating the soil started in Nov and went through at least Mar.

kind of a funny way to put it considering he was guilty.

There is a lot of blame to spread around. Multiple developers told the Governor that the original program was not buildable even in the robust real estate market that existed a few years ago. Those developers were dropped by the state. Then the city and then new Mayor Perez were uncooperative as well. As the economy tanked over the last couple of years, it made building anything substantal there even harder. Im guess we should just be proud of all that was accomplished in the last 10 years including the new Comunity College, the Convention Center, the Marriott, the UConn Football stadium and the Science Center. That is still a lot of development for a city like Hartford. Add in all the residential development and the proposed AI building at Consitution Plaza and anyone would agree a lot of good was done here. Jay

Good post - I wonder why Perez was uncooperative? You would think he would be 100% behind construction.

I think he wanted things to be HIS way. He was new to office and had to show that he was in charge. Jay

Everyone is guilty of something...search long enough and you'll find it: A witch hunt.

The people who persecuted him are probably 30 times more dirty...but thems politics today I guess.

P.S. No one has single handedly done for Hartford what John Rowland did. Hate him, love him - not the point, it's just reality.

He also did more for contractors, but that's a dog with different fleas, LOL!

I just can't wait for Perez to step down. IMO he has not been good for Hartford, particularly with these corruption charges looming over him. I know, I know, he's innocent until proven guilty. Whatever, I don't get a good vibe from him. At times I still wish we had Peters as mayor. I met him once, what a character!

JViello - I agree with you that John Rowland did a LOT for Hartford. It is too bad that his corruption scandel has clouded that fact.

Mike - I also agree with you that Perez has not been good for Hartford at all. He failed to build upon the great things that were left to him by Mayor Mike Peters. He accepts praise for things that were started under the previous administration but really has not accomplished much on his own.

The fact that he has let several major employers leave the city when they could have stayed if offered the right deal. WFSB was ready to build a major new studio in the city but the Mayor dropped the ball and they moved to Rocky Hill. For years it was known that ING would have to vacate Aetna's building eventually. Why couldn't the Mayor put together a deal for them to stay downtown. Same for Metlife and Massachusetts Life. With all the vacant lots downtown and the money that was around for major development, why did the city not put together at least one deal for a major employer to stay in the city. Very poor leadership IMHO, Jay
