I noticed that City-Data only provides data on Census Designated Places (CDPs), instead of the actual incorporated municipality. For example, if you go to the Portland, CT page, it only provides data for a small portion of the entire town of Portland. It is impossible to find data on the entire town of Portland as a whole.

Perhaps the worst case scenario is for the town of Canaan. If you look up Canaan, CT, the result is actually a small area within the town of North Canaan.

You can see the Census Designated Places that City-Data uses on this map from the U.S. Census Bureau:

http://ftp2.census.gov/geo/maps/gene...z/ct_cosub.pdf

Here is a list of CT towns that this problem occurs with:
  • Canaan
  • New Milford
  • Bethel
  • Newtown
  • Ridgefield
  • Clinton
  • Portland
  • Durham
  • East Hampton
  • Groton
  • Stonington
Take Groton, for instance. City-Data shows that Groton has a population of 9,316. However, if you go to the U.S. Census Bureau, you will see that Groton actually has a population of 39,551: http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet...rd=&_industry==

Will City-Data ever resolve this problem and include data pages for the entire town? I think it's a pretty bad problem and is very misleading.

I've noticed this on both the Stonington and East Hampton pages too. Quite annoying!

Ever since I noticed this (about a year ago), I stopped using City-Data altogether. Instead, now I use the U.S. Census website for more accurate and comprehensive data. I mean, that's the main source of City-Data's data anyway. But, it would be nice if City-Data would recognize this problem and fix it ASAP!

True...and correct. Here's why:

1) The town of North Canaan includes the village of Canaan (different from the town of Canaan).

2) The town of Canaan includes the hamlet of Falls Village or South Canaan (the two names most often used by locals for their "town").

To avoid confusion, the Statewide MLS considers North Canaan and Canaan the same town (code 123).
