We found a house that we like in Southington and would like to move there before school starts. I was wondering if it was a nice place to raise a family. I'm not asking for much, just good schools and quiet safe place to raise my young school aged kids.

Any input would be nice
Thanks
Mel

We live in Shelton and honestly I haven't ever heard anything bad about Southington.

We been there several times, they hold computer shows at the high school.

Southington is a decent town to
raise kids.
Consider other surrounding towns
also.

google Southington, CT

We've visited my DH's co-worker
in Southington ... the neighborhood
was a very nice upscale area.

Not familiar with the school system.

Good luck!

melhuber,

Based on cnn money's website for 2005 best places to live, Southington stats are pretty good. Low personal & property crime index. Pretty good household income. Seems like decent people live there. It is a contender for Ct. as a best place to live. Not all towns make the list. So if it made the list as a contender it has to be pretty good.

Wish I could tell you more about today's Southington! I grew up there--it's my hometown--and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. Of course, that was in the 1950s and 1960s, when Southington was essentially a farming community with a foundry.

I remember tobogganing down Graham's Hill, the town center with the imposing Congregational Church, Roger's Orchards (more than just a place to buy apples if you had a VW Bug and senior high school boys who would buy you 1/2 pints of Cutty Sark), downtown merchants, walking to St. Thomas's, the penny candy store... and oh, so much more!

Good luck with your decision!

Southington offers a real nice high quality of life for the money- very good schools, low crime, ample shopping and local services, good recreation and really reasonable housing costs. There are to be sure more upscale and elegant places in the state- but you will get lots of bang for your buck in Southington.

Southington is one of the nicer towns in central connecticut with easy access to 84 and 91. From what I've read, the schools are excellent..They have awards for "what parents want", "expansion magazines gold medal" and "blue ribbon school of national excellence". A recent article named the school systems of southington and cheshire in the top 18% for the state and top 12 percent in the nation. this article might help you. Hartford magazine ranked the town #1 in hartford county for quality of life http://www.southingtoncoc.com/southnigton-qol.html (broken link) . It is getting expensive though with home costs reaching the $400,000-500,000 dollar range. Median house hold income is around $90,000, and schools with higher income towns usually reflect stronger education. Crime is also one of the lowest in the state. I found some pictures to show what the town looks like
