Redding and Bethel are lovely towns (Redding more upscale and expensive) and both have trains that will get you to Stamford, albeit with a quick switch of trains in South Norwalk, but not a bad commute at all.

I'd think with houses not selling and people underwater, you'd be able to get a great deal on a rental that would suit your needs in Fairfield or Redding. Westport, like many have said, might be out of range. I'd also go with Fairfield over Trumbull.

Exactly what I was thinking. Even if it takes the same amount of time to do this, it is way less stressful.
