Whoa whoa whoa folks...you don't even know the commission structure or amount! It's 25K PLUS commission, not "25K".

Yes 25K isn't much, but I know PLENTY of Telcom reps making 20-30K base with 30-40K a year in commission consistently. (I used to work in the telcom industry for about 5 years on both sales and tech support to sales.)

To say you can't "depend" on commission is only correct if you don't plan on working - because you'll get canned for not hitting quota.

OP: If you can pull 15-20K commission consistently, you'll be fine.

Ask the GM what the average commission check is in the store - then ask them what the highest and lowest is. That will give you an indicator of what a "top performer" and a "slug" can expect and what the guys in the middle do.

Tell them what you need to survive and ask if it's realistic. I don't know a sales manager that would not be upfront with you about numbers and realistic goals - they don't need the headache of lying to you so you can fail.

Best of luck.

I loved working there until Cingular bought AT&T Wireless. After that people stopped coming in the AT&T store cus Cingular built a brand new store on the other end of the mall shortly after. The benefits there were amazing. I had awesome coverage (a lot better than I have now) and only had to pay $4/paycheck for dental coverage.

If the commission is good, I say go for it. If you end up not making enough you can always get a part time job somewhere. Hell, I'm 29 now and i finally realize I need a part time job after being out of college for 6 years.

All of my friends have moved away and I have always wanted to move and explore. As I am an only child my parents do not want me to move at all.

My prediction is Verizon is about to jump ahead that much more than it already has.

ATT has been relying on the iphone for too much of their revenue - but their network sucks and the droids are coming on strong. I have the new MOT Droid and with the coverage and the phone itself I would toss the iphone in the pail. My entire office is off Microshaft Office and we are 100% web based on Google direct synced with the droids in the field. One system that has one focal point. I can track everyone at the flick of a finger with built in GPS, our appointment calender is in direct sync with the office and contains all job info - including the address that is simply a finger push to activate turn by turn navigation - all contacts are sync'd in one point and shared out etc etc.

Combined with IP phone service, anyone in my office can work from anywhere with a high speed internet connection and have FULL FUNCTION and productivity including our phone number ringing in Portland ME or wherever they plug in like they were in Manchester. All for FREE. (Thanks Google!)

It's so smooth and coverage is so good I almost cry compared to the days of running Microsoft Mobile and having to tunnel and push from a static server and PC in the office with several "sync" clients etc.

There is also the "rumour" ( ) that the iphone will also be on Verizon's network late Spring early Summer of 10. If that happens, ATT is going to tank pretty hard.

Here's one idea. Finish your minor (online if the last class is offered that way) stay home and figure out what you want to do for 6 months.

While you are thinking, here is the straight talk. Reading an hanging out with friends is not a life plan, it is college and college is over. Now if you can GET PAID to read, then work for a magazine, newspaper, or publisher in their editing depts. The other part of it is you need to realize that everyone needs to pay their dues in the working world, and (even with a degree) you will need to start with some less than glamourous assignments, and figure out how to work for and with some dirtbags who just want to get ahead at your expense - - and yes that happens at every job.

Also, you need a plan that gets you past the possibility that you'll love hanging out with your friend at her apt.,but hate going to work selling phones in a mall. You'll meet testy customers that make you want to cry, everyday. I worked retail from 16 to 32 (some of that time was full time - some was part time), and had a lot of other jobs along the way, teaching, credit office, administration, analyst, etc..

We have found several places in Chester for about $850 a month and in Old Saybrook for $950. Split between two people it seemed reasonable and doable. We already have all the supplies; leftover stuff from college and friends. My friend's boss gave us a brand new couch from Ikea. So we won't be buying anything else for the apartment as we have everything so I wouldn't have that additional expense to worry about. My car is completly paid off so the only cost on that would be insurance and gas. If I live close to where I work that won't be too bad though. I have a corolla so it is great with gas mileage.

Having just one class left on your business minor, not being dead set on where you want to go, and not being competely caught up in having an 8 digit income makes your situation pretty flexible. I would say finish up your minor, and snce you aren't sure where you want to go maybe put your resume out to some of the major employers in the area. Electric Boat, Pfizer, Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, even the Navy Base and Coast Guard Academy. If you liked public relations some the casinos might have an attractive position for you, or maybe you want something a little less glam, you might try Pfizer, they always need better public relations lol. Who knows what Electric Boat would be looking for, but whatever it is I can assure you they would pay very well. The Navy base has tons of openings for all sorts of contracting positions, maybe you might see one that you like. And like J said, check with the manager at the Verizon store and find out what commision would look like; your 25K base might really be looking closer to 35K-40K with standard commision.

I appreciate your valuing time with people and recreational activities over having a large money cushion. I have friends who for many many years have made around 30K a year, and are absolutely content and happy to spend their free time hanging out with friends and family, reading, biking, going to the park; all in all not fretting about how little money they have. The would probably be the first to tell you that they wouldn't be opposed at all to having more money, or that there are definitely difficult times, but they usually seem to be the most consistently happy and fulfilled people that I know.

Good luck with your search, I hope you find something that suits you perfectly. If you have any other questions or concerns I am sure somebody here has an answer.
