Wow, I live in NJ and only pay about $750/year. I thought NJ was always the worst when it comes to taxes.

There are too many variables involved. My best suggestion would be to ask your neighbors, if their homes are relatively comparable to yours.

Well, my house is about half that size, so maybe that explains it. I'm also in a rural area, with a volunteer FD and no hydrants.

There are too many variables involved in determining the cost of home insurance like many of the above posts stated. To give a snapshot of the factors used here is a short list: location - closer to the shore higher the rate due to wind and hail exposure. also distance to fire stations and fire hydrants (this is known as protection class) age of home, construction type, claim history and financial stability of the applicatant - this is why I wouldnt recommend asking neighbors cause everyone's case may be different.
Many of the major carriers do provide discounts for having the auto and home insurance combined. Other discounts may include claim free, protective devices, retired discount, among others.
Just today I helped a new client out in northern CT with coverage amount of 300k and his premium was only $500.
If you have any further questions, I would be glad to assist.
