My g/f currently lives in western New York and I'm trying to help job hunt for her around the Hartford, CT area. Hope this thread could apply to others in a similar situation.

I wanted to ask for tips on best ways I could help her without her being in this area? I was thinking of attending some networking events that relate to her field of study/experience (communications, public relations, and banking) and possibly pass out resumes on her behalf. But am I doing more harm than good in that situation?

Any other suggestions/tips to find a job for someone else who doesn't live in the area yet?

All help is sincerely appreciated

With all do respect, it's pretty unprofessional, in my opinion. It's one thing to get her a job with a friend of yours or relative-- Someone you know who will hire her on YOUR merits, but its really unlikely that anything will be influenced by a resume that someone couldn't be bothered to deliver in person. Those events are geared towards meeting people not obtaining resumes.

Why not just get her here to look for a position herself? Western New York isn't Japan, and she should be able to make it here periodically to job hunt. She can use the internet, Craigslist, and numerous other resources to try to arrange interviews during her trips to CT.

Unfortunately, right now its hard enough to find a job for oneself, let alone for someone else.

Thanks for the reply.

She is able to make it here every now and then. She does have a current job that is not too flexible so that's why I'm trying to help out here any way I can.

Her best bet is to send out tons of resumes and find recruiters that work in the area. If they insist on a face to face meeting, she should set aside a week's vacation, and line up 3 or 4 recruiter's every day for that time. They would appreciate her traveling to see them, and would probably be flexible. And, Internet boards, craigslist, etc. are a great place to start getting some leads.

Unfortunately for her there is a lot of competition for just about any job. I read a few months ago that there was something like 12 unemployed people for every job posting...and that excludes anyone marginally employed, employed in a position beneath their usual level, those who gave up looking, and those who are actively employed but still want/need a change.
