Does anyone have any advice on how to handle unruly tenants? At my condo there are a handful of units that are being rented out. Most of the renters are fine, I know some of them well & they're very respectful.

The problem is there was some damage done to my complex, I suspect by college students who go to school either at UConn or, more likely, UHart and have units rented out to them. Because it snowed yesterday thru today, the plow trucks had to clear the parking lot. The complex has a policy that if it snows you have to move your car within 24hrs after it snows so they can clear it. I, and most people who live here, didn't think it had snowed enough where anyone would come to clear it since it wasn't that much & you could still drive around the complex ok. But I got a call from a friend of mine telling me to move my car or they would tow. I did, so I was fine. Others got towed, and when I got back later this afternoon someone literally ripped the gate door off the hinges. What probably happened is their car got towed and they reacted. This is going to cost a fortune to fix, and I AM NOT paying for this. After it happened I was talking to another renter who said she's been having problems with her neighbors who also rent, they're colllege fraternity students who have constantly made a mess and made a lot of noise. One time after she politely asked them twice to keep the noise down, they took a fire extinguisher, put the hose under the door and sprayed the inside of this woman's complex. This is what gets me pissed. It's always these neanderthal college kids who get away with just about anything. I own my own unit and have no plans to leave. I want this taken care of and I'm ready to go to the police, but I don't know if it will even make a difference. Anyone have any advice?

That is why I will never own a condo. that is the risk u take when u buy a condo. they get rented sometimes. go to the condo assoc. and the college and they will ban students from being allowed to rent there.

Does your condo HOA not have security or at least camera to help police i.d. and prosecute the vandals?

Unfortunately not. There's never really beena need for cameras since it's usually pretty quiet andthe neighborhood is safe. But as the saying goes, you can never be too careful. Maybe now they WILL get a camera.

Unless you find out who did the damage, there is not much you can do. Are you renting as well? If you are you can tell the landloard what has happened and what your suspicion is. If you own the unit, contact your insurance company and do the same. The insurance company won't fault you, but you may have to pay the deductible.
