Table: U.S. States Ranked by Life Expectancy

1. Hawaii
2. Minnesota
3 & 4. Connecticut & Utah
5. Massachusetts

One reason I think CT ranks so high is because the people here prefer a higher quality ingredient, and frequent chains less often than people in other parts of the country. In taking these rankings with a grain of salt, can anyone else speculate as to why CT's average life expectancy is 3-4 years more than Mississippi's?

Simply put its ..OBESITY.. Levels in New England are lower. Here in the south its ridiculous. I have never , ever seen as many heavy people as I do here in North Carolina. Same applies for the midwest.

I think it might have to do with access to good medical care. We have some pretty good medical facilities here. Plus we have a well educated population. Together that makes a difference. Jay

Very true. But then again, so do places like New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware. I wonder what makes places like CT, MA, UT and MN stand out.

I wonder how similar it would be if we could see this list compared to a list of the states with the most gyms/health clubs per capita.

Correlate the data with this table showing the percentage of blacks in the population of each state. Blacks, statistically, have less medical care and a lower life expectancy.

u.s. black population

In NY's case, it may just be because it is so much bigger geographically and there are wide cultural and socioeconomic differences between different parts of the state. Despite NJ ranking low, I have a feeling if "NY" consisted only of NYC, Long Island and everything south of Poughkeepsie it would rank higher.

Do you think that's due to income, genetics, or diet? From my understanding, the southern states do have more affluent blacks than the northern states, no?

I completely agree. Same with the "wealth" factor. If it consisted of the boundaries you gave, NY would probably be the wealthiest state.
