Sounds like you are as busy as I am getting ready for spring (lol).

We have 10 different projects going on, and the only way I seem to get things done is to start early in the season. I have already tilled the soil in the back garden, and installed a rain collector on the greenhouse roof. This weekend should be nice for spring chores, sunny and in the 50’s. I try to do all the heavy work in March, April, and early May. Then once the hotter weather sets in, do the lighter stuff.

Do you (or anyone) have any snow cover left? The snow was gone more than a week ago down here on the shoreline, but maybe there is a bit left up in the higher elevations of the NW hills. From the looks of the new maps, the snow cover is now close to 100 % gone in the Tri-State area. It looks like now only New England, the Great Lakes, and the Western States still have snow cover:

we have a few VERY small stubborn snow/ice patches left in the shaded areas which im sure will be gone by the end of the weekend.

i LOVE spring so i always have a full list of both indoor and outdoor project that i like to try and get done in march and april, so by the time may comes along i can put all my focus into my flowers and veggie garden lol.

Most of our snow has also melted, with some patches left in shady areas. And on the north side of our house, where it gets no snow, we have a couple of feet. I don't see that area melting any time soon, until it gets direct sunlight. One of our neighbors in full sun has no snow left, while others that are surrounded by mature trees still have quite a bit in areas due to shade.

the last of it seemed to have melted today...
i spent my entire afternoon in the garden removing the thick layer of soggy yicky leaves from the pond area and flower bed that didnt get removed before the snow hit. i knew i had to get them up so they wouldnt rot the plants starting to wake up, but it was sooo gross lol. the chickens had a blast with all the snails, grubs and other yicky buggs i found while removing the leaves though LOL!

We're coming in Monday to check out UConn. It was 80 here today. I'm worried about freezing when we're there. Other than high near 50 can you tell me anything else about the weather? Is wind a big factor? Much humidity? That seems to make any temp seem colder. Do I need to bring a really heavy coat? Thanks.

Next week is supposed to be mild by seasonal standards (upper 40s - mid 50s). Humidity is not a factor this time of year. Coming from Texas though you will find the evenings & mornings cold, and while I've put mine away for the season, cannot discourage you from bringing a heavy coat.

Do you have fish in your pond? Yesterday the snow around my pond finally melted so I began clearing out the remaining leaves, and discovered two dead goldfish. Another is covered in ich, but thankfully the rest seem okay. This is the first winter I've lost fish, I think it was all the snow. I do have a de-icing ring, but it wasn't ice that was the problem, every time it snowed it turned the pond into a "slushy". I did see a few frogs though, so thankfully they made it through the winter.

Today I'll be raking leaves off my gardens, too. Plus I want to check out the new Home Depot and Trumbull, particularly the garden dept.

I really accomplished a lot yesterday. The garden is now ready for planting; I got all the leaves and junk out of it, and tilled the soil. I think the wet leaves/decomposing helped the soil as far as nutrients. Also, the bamboo grove looks great! I was worried there for awhile back in January, with the storms coming back to back and all the heavy snow. Normally we don't get all that much snow on the Connecticut coast - about 20 inches or so, so my bamboo never really had a big test in the last 7 or 8 years. Thank god the heavy snow really was confined to mostly just January. The cold wind chills back in January also had me worried: Most bamboo really suffer when wind chills get down to less than about 10 F. We had several nights down here on the Connecticut coast/Long Island that fell into the 5 F range and were really windy – but the bamboo seems to have done fine. The warming weather the past week and the rainfall have helped a lot. My little Southeast Asian rainforest is intact! Here is a quick pick out the window…

Now I have to wait a few more weeks for the rest of the yard to turn green
