I just got back from Washington DC and I kid you not, it actually felt REFRESHING stepping off the plane at Bradley yesterday afternoon. It was that hot in DC. One night, at 10 pm, it was still 90! It is bad up here but not *that* bad!

I’m with you there. I’ll take this any day over overcast, cold, snowy weather, when everything is dead outside. This type of weather reminds me of old fashioned East Coast summers. Yes, it is tough in direct sun, or when doing heavy labor. Yesterday I helped the neighbor cut down an old Oak tree…and the water just pours off you. Otherwise, if you just slow down and keep hydrated, it’s not too bad.

One other interesting note: I checked the max high temp and max dew point temp in a few deep tropical cities (Singapore, Kingston, Jamaica, Bangkok, San Juan, Yangon (Rangoon)…etc. Most of these cities had highs in the 87 to 93 F range, with dew points in the 74 to 78 F range (heat index around 100 F +/-). Yesterday afternoon, most NWS stations in the Tri-State area/Middle Atlantic had temps in the 90 to 95 range, and dew points in the 70 to 77 F range. So yesterday truly was a day like they get in the deep tropics.

One of the highest dew/temp combo I saw was Chester: At 3:00 PM yesterday Chester had a temp of 89 F and dew point of 77 F …the same conditions that much of Burma experienced yesterday.

Central Park just broke the 101 degree record temp for July 22nd. Stratfords record is 103 in 1957. Can we beat that??

Stratford/Bridgeport not even close, I just checked, they're 95 right now (BTW, that 103 is their ALL-TIME high as well). There was talk about Central Park cracking it's all time high of 106 (set July 9, 1936) but I see that it peaked a 104 and is "down" to 103, though yesterday it went down a degree or two at this time then went back up. If it stays at 104, it will tie for 2nd all-time with July 21, 1977 (I was 9 1/2 years old and remember being in the pool all day) and August 7, 1918.

However, Hartford's all time record of 102 (several times, most recently last July) has been tied at both Bradley (the main weather station) and Brainard Airport near downtown I think there's a good shot of that cracking.

One other station did break their all time record, Newark Airport in NJ is at 106 right now. They had a lot of dates with 105 (most recently in 1993 I believe) that they broke. That 106 is the warmest Northeast reading so far in this heat wave (2nd is the 104 at Central Park and downtown Baltimore today, 104 was also achieved in Elmira, NY yesterday; not only was it their all-time high temperature, it was their first 100+ degree reading since 1953! Syracuse, NY came within 1 degree of their all-time high yesterday (they hit 101, the record of 102 occured the same day in the 1930s that NY Central Park hit 106), but today they are "only" in the 90s.

I just drove from Shelton where it was 99, to Stratford. As I drove to Stratford I watched the thermometer creep up to 104. I stayed there for an hour or so, and it was still 104 as I headed back to Shelton, where it gradually went back to a balmy 99. LOL. I thought at first maybe it was Rt. 8 and the asphalt making it so high, but even after staying in Stratford awhile my thermometer still read 104. Maybe my car thermometer is off a few degrees.

Wow, I just saw them talk about the sudden rise from 95 to 101 in Bridgeport on channel 7 news at 4, they have a shot at that 103 after all (I wonder what happened, maybe the winds were from the south or east and shifted to the west?). But I also see now that JFK airport (on the water and tends to have similar temperature tendencies to Bridgeport that isolate it from the rest of the region) dropped from 101 to 96 that same hour, so I suspect the "sea breeze" is going to kick in again and stop Sikorsky Airport from getting to 103.

Both Brainard and Bradley in Hartford have been holding at 102 the last 3 hourly readings! I wonder if they hit 103 somewhere "in between the hour" and broke the all-time record instead of tying it (the 104 high at Central Park so far was that way today, it was "between" official readings of 103 at 1pm and 102 at 2pm). I have a friend in the Hartford area who's teaching a middle school level "summer enrichment class" and they had a class trip to the Peabody Museum today, she told me the museum was thankfully A/C but the school bus was not and they ate lunch outside! (in the shade of course).

Newark, NJ is down to 106 now so their incredible high is probably 108, but it might be 109 if the same thing I describe above happened! I'm always a bit suspect about Newark Airport though, I've been a weather geek almost all my life (especially regarding the Tri-State and from New England to DC in general) and I've noticed that since the 80s Newark is always consistently warmer than the rest of the area (in fact, usually warmer than anything down to Virginia) from April to October but this was not so before then when I look at some of their older data. Seems very strange to me, I remember reading a few years ago that they were thinking of checking out the equipment, records, etc. I mean, a degree or so I could accept but they are 4-5 degrees higher today than any weather station within a few hundred miles of any direction from them. The 12 noon NYC news (I don't remember if it was channel 2 or 7) even noted that in recent decades Newark is by far the "hottest" area weather station in the summer and interviewed local residents about why they think it's so hot there.

Boston has an outside shot at its all time high of 104, set back in 1911! (It's at 102 now). It's only the 25th time in 139 years of record 100 or more was achieved there. What's more incredible is they're now reporting an overcast sky with that 102 temperature, have you ever heard of it being 100-degrees and CLOUDY? (My guess is it's actually fog rolling in and they're going to drop soon too).
