Thursday January 12, 2012 Storm Update:

Talk about busy.

#1. Heading to great lakes but will pushing moisture to us to start wednesday night. #2 forms off the coast thursday morning and heads up giving 60mph gusts to Rhode Island northward. #3 is the one to watch for additional snow accumulations Friday.

After 1 & 2 pass, the cold front comes through and #3 clipper comes through that could drop 1-3" for everyone 3-6" north of MA. Its moisture starved for now.

Rain totals for entire period should be over an inch.

A very FAR cry from last year's January 12th, eh? 22" storm total in Hartford!?

Yup...and the sustained cold too. Amazing how the snowpack kept us refridgerated.

80% of Connecticut will have no issues with this storm. The 20% are the ones above 1000 feet that could come across slick morning roads.

Small write up for Thursdays storm from Matt N. MATTNOYES.NET - NEW ENGLAND WEATHER ANALYSIS: Though storm brings optimism for Northern New England snow, some areas of substantial uncertainty remain

From Boston.

WINDS WILL BE SWITCHING FROM THE WEST TO THE NORTH BRINGING IN SOME COOLER AIR. ALLOWING TEMPS TO BE SLIGHTLY COOLER THAN TODAY...EXPECTING MID 30S TO LOWER 40S ACROSS THE REGION

BELIEVE THE ONSET OF PRECIP WILL BE SOMETIME AFTER 10pm BEGINNING IN CT AND MOVING NORTHEASTWARD. WITH THE COLD TEMPS AT THE ONSET ALLOWING THE PTYPE TO BEGIN AS SNOW. SIG WAA MOVING UP TOWARDS THE AREA COULD YIELD TO ICING ACROSS CT/WESTERN MASS BETWEEN 10pm-1am

Thanks Cambium for your concern, but in the Hartford area where I'd be flying, the winds are only supposed to gust to around 20 kts, well within my comfort zone--especially when it is blowing straight down the runway as opposed to being a crosswind.

Icing potential is actually far more of a concern with this system for flying than wind is, but even that shouldn't be a problem later in the day Thu once the warm air advection pushes out that shallow low level wedge of cold air. Both the GFS and NAM skew-t's are showing the lowest freezing level at 6000' or higher from 7AM to at least 7 PM tomorrow for Hartford.

I remember a few occasions (12-12-10 and 11-13-09 during "Nor'Ida") when the winds at just 2000' were howling around 60 kts or slightly more (sfc gusts were 28-30 kts closely aligned with the runway both those days) as we were coming into land. We had moderate turbulence, but nothing that made me think we were in any danger. That being said, It would not have been comfortable for most passengers however!

I still need to share with u the story of my most tense flight ever dodging embedded t-storms flying from the Bahamas to Florida in Aug of 2010! On the other hand, that is something I NEVER want to do ever again and it was totally my fault for launching that day as I ignored that little voice in my head that i should have listened to!

Waking up to 20s every morning its hard to know its going to rain tomorrow but thats what happens when a storm pushes warm air from the south up to us.

Reason for the mix snow start is because the Canadien high is going to lock in the cold air underneath the storm for a while(cold air gets trapped).. So while its raining above 5000 feet, its refreezing just below 4000 feet and at the surface hence the sleet and ice.

Current temps.
