My husband and I are looking to buy our first home. We both loved CT. But, we don't know where to look. Any areas we should stay away from? We like a nice town, doesn't need be a big to do but just nice and safe. Stonington seem lovely but cann't find anything we can afford. ANY help would be great. tx

It all depends where you are going to work. Mystic/Stonington is only viable if you're in that area or perhaps up to Norwich. It wouldn't be feasible to commute to New Haven or Hartford from there.

You don't indicate your price range or how important schools are to you. If you like Stonington but it is too pricey, then check North Stonington which is immediately adjacent to it. Also look at Ledyard and Preston. thye are Thames river towns just north of Groton and are pretty nice. If schools are important, here are links to information on schools in Connecticut. Jay

First I would like to say thank you for your help.
I work full time in the Stonington area. My husband commutes to Warwick, RI. But he is able to relocate with no problem. Spending wise... we cann't go over 150k (don't wanna be house poor) and a single family or duplex is on our shopping list. No condos. We don't have any children yet... but you never know so good schools are a plus. Thanks again Jay and Lincolnian

The problem is if you live in a sleepy town you'll get bored and end up paying more in gas to drive to wonderful towns like Stonington where you can jog and stroll without getting hit by a motorist. Buy a cheap Stonington home and fix it up. The return on your Stonington real estate investment will astound you as long as you know how to wield a hammer...

since you're down there anyway and your husband already works in RI, i wouldn't rule out Westerly. sure it's not in CT (sorry guys) but i go down there occasionally and i always liked it. Rt 1 has a lot going on as far as restaurants, Walmart, etc, there's easy access to 95 and Westerly Hospital is close by. can't tell you about cost of housing though since i never bought or rented there.
