Yes, the city has proposed a streetcar. It would be very expensive to construct and operate so it is unknown if it will actually get built. It will be years before it happens if it does but at least they are planning for the future. Jay

There was a free trolley that used to run around the city, which I believe is not related to this project, but very few people rode it. I'm pretty sure they discontinued in 2008, or possibly as late as early 2009.

As the article points out, the proposed route is very Yale-centric, which is problematic if the city hopes to use it as a source of revenue. Most people who need to travel along that route already have access to the Yale shuttle, which runs along a similar path, and is free to all Yale students, faculty, and employees (and in reality to non-Yale people who manage to jump on as well, since they don't check ID) within its service area.

Considering the other problems that New Haven as, as well as the existing public bus system, I'm not sure this should be a priority for the city.

New Haven has the free Yale Shuttle as well as a free downtown circulator operated by CT Transit. Other universities allow the general public to ride their buses; this could reduce the need for so many parallel bus services in New Haven and also the need for a trolley. Or conversely, the trolley could cut out the need for so many Yale buses!

Both very good opinions...Honeslty, there are too many busses clogging the already small streets in new haven, And lets face it new haven is not the way it used to be back in the good ole days. Yale is cracking down on free use. I am a 25 year old, and I recently (dressed nice) tried to ride the bus and was turned away after not having a valid id...I want to say the new buses are rumored to have a Id checker. The Cttransit inter city loop dose not run on a good schedual and the clientell that uses the bus is sketchy.

inetlom the free new haven trolley even ran into Hamden plaza area and to the center...which was great. but it shut down to early as I tried to ride it into new haven and back after a night at the bars. Also frequent ct transit bus riders said it ran to infrequent. I do agree that new haven needs to clean the city up and maybe add or redesign a new downtown area around Yale or clean up other squares.
