The wife and I are looking to buy our first house. Both of us are from Westchester and have lived here our whole lives outside of a 2 year stint renting in Greenwich. Have a 2 yr old so school will be a consideration soon enough.

Our budget is low for the region (< $350K) and we were focusing on CT for the reduced taxes. I have many friends in Dutchess so I would gladly consider NY but feel that the tax issue could be a big difference.

I work somewhat odd hours so my commute isn't as big an issue but the wife is pretty much a 9-5er so we don't want to move too far away due to traffic that time of day.

We were focusing our search so far on New Fairfield. I want to know if I'm overlooking any good towns. I would really prefer to avoid areas that are overrun with illegal immigrants as I've heard that the children of these immigrants can often negatively affect the schools. Trains are not important to us. Don't really use quaint downtown areas or have any special needs like that.

If I'm wrong about any of my presumptions, I apologize and please correct me.

It depends on how far you are willing to commute. For that price, I think the Danbury area would be good and New Fairfield would have been my first suggestion. I would also check into neighboring Brookfield and Bethel and possibly New Milford. even rural Sherman may be an option. Good luck, Jay

The market is very competive in the price range between $325,000 and $375,000 in the towns of New Fairfield, Brookfield and Bethel. Current inventory is at 2.7 months according the latest data (4/12/2010).

Lots of people in the Danbury area commute to southern Westchester.
