We are relocating this Summer for my husbands job in NYC. We have three boys aged 13 to 7. High priority is schools. Also high priority is sports programs. The boys love playing baseball. Would like to keep house under $600k with a nice yard, great school and community that supports childrens sports recreation programs. Where should we move?

Public or private?
If public, CT. If private, NY.
In general, the farther you are from the city, the farther your dollar will go.
In NY, Westchester county is very popular, as is Fairfield County in CT, (especially for commuters) but 600K will not go far in either locale.

If you don't mind a bit of a longer commute, consider Fairfield. It's within reachof New York City, about a 1 hour 15 minute train ride via MetroNorth. You can get a house for under $600k there. Not a large house but a decent sized one, and the public schools there are excellent. Anything further west of Fairfield is REALLY expensive. There might be houses available in some towns within your budget, but your dollar won't go nearly as far there, and if you do find a house there, it will be small.

Your budget can do well up in the Danbury/Brookfield/Bethel and New Fairfield. You would be looking at 4 bedroom 2.5 bath colonials with about 2800 square feet on about an acre of land. Many residents take the Harlem train line inot Grand Cetnral Station from the Southeast Golden Bridge, or Katonah, NY train station just across the border. Good luck!

Bethel, Brookfield and New Fairfield all have great schools. Consider Ridgefield as well.

You can read about the schools on each respective districts website & on places like greatschools.org. Among those 4 choices, Danbury & New Fairfield would have the easiest commute to NYC. New Fairfield would have the most 'Vermonish' feel. Danbury does offer a mix of city & suburban, and does have the widest variety of real estate options. Bethel has a charming village and all of their schools are located on one campus. There are many places to shop in Brookfield along Federal Rd and does have a variety of single family neighborhoods with homes valued anywhere from about $250,000 for a small home in Candlewood Shores to over $2 million for a waterfront on Candlewood Lake or Lake Lillinonah.
