Hi

We may be moving to the USA later this year. If we do, my husband will be working in Brooklyn near prospect park. We would prefer to live in Connecticut (more space for our family and 2 dogs). Can anyone recommend nice, safe towns that would be about a 1 hour commute from Brooklyn by public transport? Is this possible or should we consider living in brooklyn itself?

Thanks!

The only town that will give you close to an hour commuter (though it will still likely take longer then 1 hour, would be Greenwich, but you will need at least 1 million dollars to get into greenwich, and even then that doesn't give you much of a house.
I personally would look into NY.

If you want to live within 1 hour of Brooklyn, you're best off looking at Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. There is no way you can make the trip between CT and Brooklyn during rush hours within 1 hour. Heck, it'll take you 1 hour just to get out of Prospect Park - unless you're travelling by subway.

And there's plenty of space out on Lawnguy land for a family with 2 dogs.

I agree with looking into Long Island. Connecticut is closer to the Bronx.

You might want to check out Staten Island.

The problem with checking out Staten Island is that there is a $12 bridge toll for cars - no matter where you want to go (small discount for SI residents). Staten Island has no tunnels and only the ferry (which no longer allows cars, thank you 9/11 ) is a free way off the island and it only goes into the city (meaning Manhattan). It would take a minimum of 1 bus and a subway to get to Prospect Park: 1 bus across the bridge, then a subway/bus to PP. Additionally, most people would have to take at least one bus to get to the Brooklyn-bound bus (there are only 2). Staten Island also has no subway. There are express buses from all over the island, but they go into Manhattan (referred to as "the city") and then you'd have to take a subway or bus back over to Brooklyn.

I wish you luck with your move: I don't envy you. We move to the country in 17 months - retirement! - and I won't look back.

CT is NOT the place to look if you are working in Brooklyn. End of Story. No way no how!
