Well, you can get by...it would be rough and very tight for space and finances.
The rough one is rent. Ct just costs more. It sounds though that a family your size might qualify for assistance for groceries. There are lots of muti family homes in Stratford and north Bridgeport. Nobody gets anywhere when they stay put, follow your dreams, but expect the start to be bumpy.

I have lived in Eastern CT since 1989 and on that kind of money you likely just won't make it. After taxes and SS he may bring home $750. per week. You will have about $3,000 per month to live on.

You will have at least a $200 or $300 per week grocery bill, or $800 per month. The electric rates are some of the highest in the nation, so even if you have $100 per month that wil be inexpensive.. Oil heating is about $.250 per gallon and gasoline is some of the highest in the nation.Today it is about $2.75 per gallon. You will spend about $200 a month if you fill a 20 gallon tank once a week. TV just basic cable will be $50 per month and if you want satellite look for about $100 for multiple outlets. Telephone? Depends what you have, but even just two cell phones and no land lines, another $100 per month. If you have a car payment of $300 per month and car insurance will likely eat another $100 per month. You willl have to pay at least $1000 -1500 per month to rent a house. Heating if you heat with oil will likely run you at least $200 per month if you spread that over 12 months on a budget plan.

I have probably missed something in the budget but sit down and see if you can live on $ 3000 per month take home pay. You don't want to live in an apartment house with the amount of kids you have. You want a house. The budget of $1000 - $1500 will provide a nice 4 bedroom home in Shelton / Ansonia.

This adds up to about $2800 a month leaving you about $50 per week pocket money. Idon't see how you will make it here in CT on that small salary.

I would also stay put in KY. Don't worry about the schools. You can help your kids outside of schools and the University of Ky at Lexington is an excellent higher educational institution.

Ct is full of elites who rule this state with a veto proof Democrat legislature. The government is in disarry and in debt to the tune of millions and millions of dollars. In 1991 Weiker instituted the income tax to balance the budget, and it did for a few years. BUt it only allowsed state government to grow even larger than it was in 91. It was a license to spend spend and spend more. Now the state is in debt up to its ears again, and increased taxation will be the only way the will solve the problem. Ct government keeps growing and growing and the cost of the entitlements will eventually push the budget higher and higher. So, the more money you earn here, the more the government will take away from you.

I would recommend you stay put and keep looking to relocate into a more fiscally sound state.

Best of luck

But few are in as bad shape as Connecticut. (Oh, the legislature and governor have pushed the reckoning into the future, but the bills are eventually coming due. That's why the state credit rating just got reduced.)

So he had the offer, but it will be rescinded because of a credit check? That's not right..... (I know sadly it's legal though, lots of threads in the Work and Employment forum on this in the past and last year Congress tried to ban it.....).

It will be a blessing if he gets rejected. That is just not enough money to live on in this area, even if you are the queen of economizing.

This isn't the point at all. There are states that have a surplus.

The point is that CT, in 1991 after the income tax was instittuted had a balanced budget but the legislators couln't resisit growing government more and more. They are never satisfied with what they have in the treasury, they have to spend it. The CT treasury had a surplus of almost one billion dollars two years ago in the "rainy day fund" and refused to rebate the taxpayers. The more money we are forced to pay in taxes, the more ways the government will find to spend it.

Those in government who submit budgets hardly even decrease their budget now do they? I know many administrators who say right up front if they don't increase their budget, it will be decreased and they will fall behind in their spenidng of tax dollars. So this is a never ending pick pocket of the taxpayer's money and it goes on thoroughout the government process with tax and spend irresponsible legislators.

It is time to shrink government. It is obvious to anyone who wants to examine the budget issues, we don't have a government income problem, we have a government spending problem.

Don't forget that they also began to receive annual $$$$ from Foxwoods in '92, and then Mohegan in '96(?). That has been worth a few hundred million per year(at a minimum) for the state's coffers. But, they did reduce the state income tax along the way. How much was that reduction? IIRC, it was a half of a percent reduction. Wow.

Whether he passes or fails the credit check, stay put. The offer is not close to sufficient for a family in Ct.
