My gf and I are hotly deabting whether or not we should get a plasma TV or and LCD tv. Both start around $400, I found a 1080P plasma 42 inch by RCA for $400 at KMart, LCDs are running about the same but for 720P and only a 60hz refresh rate
My gf says plasmas burn out, leak, use too much electricity, glare, the list goes on and on
She wants an LCD because she claims they are efficient even though the picture is not as good.
Which is better Plasma or LCD tvs?
I would add LED but all those are out of our price range
Plasma does have better brightness, but I'd go LCD. It's lighter, lasts longer, uses less power, and new LCDs are plenty bright.
Either way though, I think you should certainly go with a good brand and NOT RCA.
For the smaller sizes you are looking at, there's not much of a difference between 1080p and 720p unless you plan on using it as a computer monitor.
120hz vs 60hz only matters during fast action scenes and sports. But you get what you pay for here. For example, Vizio's 240hz is worse than Samsung's 120hz.
Some facts here:
Plasma's are not being phased out, they are selling at a record pace this year. Plasmas do not have the burn out anymore, that problem was eliminated many many years ago. Plasmas have blacker blacks, quicker response time, can been seen from any angle without distortion or loss of brighness. Plasmas do put out more heat than LCD's or LED's. We get no glare from any of our 4 plasmas. They use no more electricity than other equivilant TV's. There is a big difference between 720 and 1080-I in picture quality.
LCD's and LED's are OK and there are many quality built ones out there, but have some drawbacks, especially the distortion from side viewing and the cost.
Your best quality plasmas are Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony. Samsung makes some of Sony's plasma screens.
