It appears that we will have to replace the bulb in our 7 year-old Sony Grand Wega. Has anyone had experience with the OEM equivalent bulbs? The price difference is considerable from the OEM and I wondered how the quality and bulb life compared.

One thing to check is to find who makes the OEM lamp, and if they offer the same lamp directly without the OEM markup. For instance, Philips makes (or made; it's been years since I looked into this) lamps for Sony, but you could buy the exact same lamp from a Philips distributor for 40% less than from a Sony distributor. Also be sure that you're getting either just the lamp or the whole assembly; whichever you're trying to buy.

7 years is a long lifespan. Keep in mind that the lamp begins to degrade approximately 100-250 hours into it's life. It's gradual enough that you won't notice, but compared to a new lamp it can be a big difference. The thinking is to replace the lamp every 2-3 years, or at "x" number of hours. You can probably find out how many hours are on the lamp by going in to the TV menu in a way that can be found on websites like avsforum.com. There may also be instructions in the manual.
