I have two hdtvs ( a Toshiba and a Samsung) that are connected to a Solid Signal antenna and amplifier in my attic. I am wondering about the built in tuners on those tvs. Are they rather weak as I have a hard time picking up some channels . I had contacted Solid Signal and they did recommend a new amp but still I really am not satisfied. When it is windy, the quality does suffer and the signal will become weak. I live within site of the tower transmitter. The tower is at the top of the mountain and I live on the side of the mountain so I wonder if the signal is going over my antenna ???
I really don't want cable ( time-warner) or dish as I don't want to watch that much tv. Nor do I want another bill.
Comments??

I bought a Samsung UN48H6350 a month ago. I have an antenna in my attic over the garage. The house is 40 miles south from the transmission tower,[Riverview FL east of Tampa] flat terrain. I get 13 HD and 30 SD channels.
If you can see the transmission tower, you should be getting a strong signal. Are you sure the tower is a 'TV' signal transmission tower and not cell phone? Go to antennaweb.org or tvfool.com to make sure. They will tell you where, how far, how many channels. The tower on a mountain and your antenna in a valley may be causing the problem. Have you tried tilting the antenna up to the tower? Do you have a correct size antenna and is it pointed directly at the tower?
The FCC says that if a 'monitor' is to be called a 'television', it must have a tuner and the FCC dictates what the tuner must be able to do. So all tuners are the same.
If you can see the tower, you should not be using an amplifier. You might be getting too much gain [overload] signal.
