No, it didn't work like magic but I didn't HAVE TO HAVE a wireless service. My Kindle doesn't have a Mayday button.

Fixing that to match the outgoing mail port on my other devices has always fixed the problem.

We're talking about YahooMail. I have a lap, but I have no clue how to check email account settings on either device (sorry).

If he had an older Kindle, it probably used 3G and setting up WiFi for it was unnecessary.

This seems like it would be a good opportunity to learn how to do that. Your internet/email provider probably has an online email tutorial that will tell you where to look and how to determine if your settings are right. It will even tell you what the settings should be.

I managed to figure it out, and I'm just a dumb poli sci major, not a computer geek. It's not rocket surgery. It just takes a little effort and some time.

If you don't want to learn how to figure it out for yourself, find a teenage relative or neighbor to do it for you.

That's so cute: you mean either rocket science or brain surgery..

It's not a matter that I don't *want* to learn, it's just a matter of what to look for. But you're right; I'll look on the service provider's page (thanks!!)

On the Kindle side, it's Mail/Settings/Yahoo/Outgoing/Port (I think). Currently it's 465, but that may be the number which needs changing.

I managed to figure it out, too: the email outbox problem was caused by my changing the pw on my lap, but not on the Kindle. Duh. And the pdf files open now after some manipulation. Looks like I'm all set.
