I had my TV/VCR combo for 9 years and lately the VCR has been playing in static. Would a VCR head cleaner work for the combo? I heard somewhere that it could cause some sound problems though.

Has it worked for anyone who has a combo?

Makes no dfference what type of VHS VCR you put a cleaner tape into. The VCR in any combo unit is the same as one in it's own case, all things being equal.
