Hello all. I just bought a new LED TV and was hoping I would not need a cable box to operate it. I have Comcast cable. I set up the TV and did the channel scan but it only seemed to "find" 6 channels but none of them actually worked. Do you really have to have a cable box? Thanks

Yes, with Comcast you need to have a cable box.

The law changed last year and cable companies are no longer required to provide unencrypted channels, so that TV tuners could tune them. Most cable companies still do, but Comcast does not.

I think you might need a digital adapter to unscramble the signals coming through your cable as there is the same problem now with Time Warner.

Yes, You need to spend the $10/month for the cable box to get basic cable. Comcast also has a digital convertor which will give you around six useless channels.

If you have comcast then they usually supply up to 3 boxes included with the service but the boxes they supply only get the channels and you have to pay extra if a box that gets on demand which also has catch up, is wanted.

How were you able to watch TV w/o a DTA or cable box?

I guess I should have mentioned that this new tv would be an addition to what I already was using. I had 2 TV's with 2 cable boxes and was adding a third set. I just thought with new sets you wouldn't need a cable box for basic cable. Thanks for all the replies.
