so I got a letter from xfinity telling me to upgrade to a docsis 3.0 modem to improve my speeds. I was wondering 1. would it improve my speeds and 2. what is the best value modem. so I don't need to rolls Royce of modems, more like the Toyota corolla. I don't mind buying a used one either, id just tell my wife its a new one.

Unless you have the budget low-speed plan, you'll probably see a performance increase with the upgrade.
Here's Xfinity's list of approved modems: DOCSIS Devices
I like the Motorola Surfboard line the best (I had one before upgrading to an Arris ... only because it was a freebie) so I say go with the SB1621 or SB1641.

Usually when one gets that letter, it usually means they finished replacing all the old cable in your area. When I got that letter and replaced my modem my download speed jumped from 20 to 50 in a matter of moments. Since then as other area's cables were updated my download speed increased incrementally to where, on average, I'm sitting at 80. If you own your own modem then I would also state to go with the Motorola. Also check your router to make sure it can handle the additional speed.

thanks. i don't really care about having more speed (but my wife would like it) so i definitely want to do this as cheaply as possibly. it would be great if I could downgrade my plan but still get the same speed with a better modem.

What are paying monthly for internet and what speed are they giving you per your statement?

You may or may not see in increase in speed. What modem do you have, and what speed are you paying for now?

my bill is currently 56.58. that is with a $10 monthly "xfinity bundled services" discount (even though I only get internet through them). the statement says my internet is "performance internet." I am currently using a RCA DCM425 cable modem.

"Performance" is "up to" 25Mbps download and 5Mbps upload.

This letter has nothing to do with the replacement of cable. It has to do with switching on DOCSIS 3.0, which, Comcast has been doing very aggressively in NJ.

With performance internet, you will only see improvements during peak times with DOCSIS 3.0... and only if it is congested in your area. One way to test this is to run speed tests throughout the day. If you get less than 25Mbps down, then you are most likely hitting congestion.

With Comcast, you want either the motorola sb6121 (good; shares 4 channels) or motorola sb6141 (better; shares 8 channels).
