Looking for a 55" and the same model is available in 120, 240 or 480 hz refresh rate, all are wifi ready but two have quad core processers. What is refresh rate and does it matter? What does the processer control and does that matter? Will it all be obsolete next year anyway? The expensive one is Directv ready but you pay for the mini genie anyway.. I guess I'm trying to convince myself to save the $400 difference.

those higher refresh rates are suppose to improve your sports watching experience, if you watch sports it makes them look more "live"

watch a movie with that mode turned on and it looks like your watching a stage play vs that 24fps filmlook

i would say the processors have to do more with the built in apps, perhaps netflix and the other computer functions work faster and more smoothly with faster processing speed

not familiar with "directv ready" as all tvs are directv ready...are you saying it has a built in directv receiver?

me personally i like minimal features so i try to get a tv with a good pic and minimal bells and whistles, but they are harder to find these days as they must put as much extra features into the sets as possible to compete with other brands

Thanks. I think the dtv ready has a antenna to pick up the receiver wireless, so you only have one receiver in your home instead of a receiver for each tv.

It depends on what you're using it for. From my perspective having four HDMI ports rank highest on my scale to purchasing a TV. From there I work down.

This link may be a good choice as it's ranked pretty well across numerous sites.

Refresh rate... think of it as at 60Hz you see the Qback throw the ball and the camera man tries to follow it.
At 120Hz you see the ball glide through the air.
At 240Hz you see the seams of the ball as it spins through the air.
At 480Hz you'll want 3D glasses to view advertisements on the ball as the stunned faces of the crowd zip by.

Go for the fewest bells and/or whistles. Consider LED/LCD, runs cooler... as opposed to LCD backlit. Don't over do the screen size, it's only TV. Rather than '3rd party equipped', consider a Roku or other DLNA device. Things will change, don't trap yourself.

My 10 year old 110 lb 32" tube Toshiba died last week. High volt went bad. I just wanted a plain TV but with 1080 and 120 HZ. I didn't want a 720 60Hz but to get 1080 120 Hz, I had to buy a TV that is internet ready with a bunch of apps. It's like buying a new car with the navigation system you don't want or need.
Living room is 15' wide. Thought a 48" TV would be good. Too big. I feel like I'm in the first row of a movie theater. Way too much head and eye movement. I can' imagine having a 60" in a 12' living room.

Actually in the mid to high priced TVs, you can go into setup and adjust the setting for that. I have a 48" TCL TV (plays music too thanks to apps) in my home office hanging on the wall that is 4' away and I don't have that problem.

If you watch soccer or basketball on TV, I would go with a higher refresh rate, but if not, I find 120Hz to be just fine for football, baseball, and most other TV programs. I agree with the more HDMI ports the better, and also would want at least one USB. The technology changes all the time but I wouldn't expect it to be obsolete next year. Even the 4K TVs have been out for 2 years now and sales are slow because people realize there isn't much 2160p content and the prices have not dropped enough to justify the expense yet.
