After some 5 years of not needing more than the occasional personal printing job from my office printer, I find myself needing a printer for a few b/w pages per month and maybe printing a few photos.

Looked at the ones at Costco and shrugged that I didn't know enough. Probably an inkjet would be fine. Probably will never receive or send a fax. Probably would use the scanner function.

Any suggestions? Obviously, trying to avoid spending more than I should.

FWIW, I bought a $35 Cannon printer at Wal-mart - does the basics copy, scan, print, but no fax.

And have you priced ink for it yet?

It doesn't really matter if the OP really just prints a few B/W pages per month. It will be more expensive per page to run, but 3-10 pages/month won't add up to much.

Now if he was printing a lot, surely a $35 printer is not going to be cost effective in the long run.

Have you purchased a current printer? The "starter cartridge" is the most "starter" I've ever seen compared to past years. I recently purchased a printer for a relative and after I did the setup I ran the ink levels. It came up as 25% across the four levels.

I bought a new HP printer on sale for $50. It is a rickety piece of junk, in my opinion, compared to the old inkjet printer I had for years.

For $50 you get what you paid for.
