Many months ago, I received an email invite to purchase an Amazon Echo for $99. I'm a gadget guy, so it was an easy decision to pull the trigger on something I knew nothing about just because it looked cool.
Just unboxed it today. At this point after an hour or so playing with it, I will say in summary it's an early adopter gadget with potential yet untapped.
You speak to it, or should I say ask questions and Alexa answers. Easy stuff life sports scores or weather works fine. It plays music from my Prime account as well as Pandora and iHeart. Also has the app with the phone for settings, and can stream music to it from the phone.
It looks like a tall can. It sounds OK, but as a self professed audiophile I'll leave the sound at OK. I like verbally adding shopping and to do lists, and then when I go out it's on my phone (on the app).
I am assuming when it officially launches in November, there will be more added functionality to it. Would I pay the full $199 price tag based on what I know right now? Probably 50/50 chance.
I have one. Mine arrived in March and I paid $99 also. I agree that it's a work-in-progress. We have fun with it, but its answers are limited, as you pointed out. I agree that it will get better.
We wish it had as much information as Google's Voice Search does on Android phones. If Google introduces a competing device at that price, I'd order one without a second thought.
That thing reminds of I Asimov's 1958 story, "A feeling of power".
