I would think that with a little ingenuity you could fashion a cover out of stiff cardboard or heavy paper stock to cover it and some clear tape across the back so you can flip it up for use.
But if your cats are as smart as ours were they'll figure it out anyway. And they'll figure out a vertical control panel as well. Cats are smart and persistent.
Edit: Here's an 8 by 11 sheet of clear Lexan that you could cut to cover the panel. $4.24 at Lowes. 11" might not be wide enough, but there are places that sell this material.
I wondered about that, but I couldn't tell for sure in the first link. That printer knocks it out of the park. It's even a laser. I've not owned an ink junk for years. I hate them.
My experience with the clogged printer heads would tend to contradict that. I'm not against another one, but am a bit leery. Also heard that Canon's printers have similar issues.
i have had such issues (clogged heads) with Epson inkjet printers, but not with a Canon Pixma Pro photo printer, although this type of printer is not what the OP is looking for
Anyway, I have two do-all Epson inkjet printers, both with clogged-enough heads that I don't want to deal with. What I plan to do is to buy a do-all laser color printer. More expensive than an inkjet printer, but I won't have to worry about clogged heads.

I could, but I don't really want to. Aesthetics still count for something and this kind of contraption would look all kinds of awkward.

Eh. I don't really see how. Slapping a button with a paw from the top of the printer (pretty much the only way to get at a vertical panel given our setup) is different from simply stepping on a button and seeing what happens.
