I don't do a lot of online shopping......old fashioned I guess.

I like to see, touch and generally evaluate what I'm buying in person, even if I may not always get the best deal. It also simplifies returns, etc.

So, I'm looking for a new, unlocked smartphone to use on a prepaid service. But not having much luck finding anything retail, brick and morter other than fly-by-night cell stores.

Any suggestions?

What's wrong with going to store and doing all of the above, THEN ordering online. Just look at a branded phone and order the same one in an unlocked version online. Anyway, Walmart and Best Buy sell unlocked phones. Look online, find out what stores in your area have in stock, then go in person.

Bestbuy stocks some, I bought an unlocked Asus Zenphone 3 Max from them not that many months ago and I am using it on AT&T and on Smart while in the Philippines.

Make sure whatever phone you decide to buy has the LTE frequencies for the provider you wish to use it on if you are going to want to use LTE.

And this practice ie even encouraged by some companies. Like Verizon. Better deals on line juch of the time. So I got to the store, touch feel... and buy online. lol
No one would blame you for wanting to feel a phone in your hand first. That's just a smart thing to do.
