I like the Sony brand and the walkman is definitely a contender. I found absolutely nothing on their site, or in the reviews, about the battery life though. And the price? Ouch.
iPad mini, you can get a refurbished Mini 4 with 128GB from Apple for around $300. Install the apps you want and update the OS. Then put it in airplane mode and turn off all wireless signals. Don't update it again. Don't add apps. You will have audio and video. Note it hasn't been updated since 2015 but is still available "new". I use one as an eReader and occasional travel iPad.
You can connect it to your MacBook Air and use iTunes to manage content. Note you want to "download" content but don't want any sort of Bluetooth or WiFi...which limits your options. Don't discount the hassle managing many GB of content.
Another option that's much less is an Amazon Fire with an added MicroSD card.
Amazon also has a ton of iPod clone MP3/MP4 players for sale for ridiculously cheap prices ($25). Can't vouch for their quality or longevity.
Otherwise what Peregrine states is a good option if you want a good device that will last a few years. But...see if you can find one where the battery is user-replaceable. The A30 is only good for around 500 charges...and this applies to any device with a non-replaceable battery (Apple devices usually get 1000 cycles).
Super helpful post with a lot of things I hadn't considered before. Thanks for taking the time to post!

Why does everybody always complain about Sony prices when nobody bats an eye when we're talking similar Apple products ? I mean they have a cheaper line, the A30 is great value for the money.
Portable is key. I definitely don't want a tablet, or anything else, that has a lot of other capabilities. I want to keep it simple - just an MP3 player. I understand your position with Apple. I actually really like their products but I loathe their company, policies, politics, egotistical prices, and all that goes with Apple.
A 7" tablet is quite portable. If you don't want video that's fine but if you do, watching it on anything smaller is a miserable experience. Can you imagine watching on a 3" screen?, lol. If all you want is audio get a Sansa clip or something similar. I personally would get a cheap android phone and use it just for music. Get one where you can expand the memory. Turn it off when you are not using it and your battery should last a long time. This solution is probably about $50 plus the cost of the memory card if any. Also, just because it has more capabilities does not mean you have to use them. Just ignore them and use what you need. An android phone does not need to be activated. You can leave it as a wifi (or no wifi) device.

Agree. $219 is not expensive for someone seriously into music IMO. 32GB iPod is $199 and not expandable.

For $100 more there’s a 128GB iPod Touch option. Or an Apple refurbished 64GB for $209. My kids got them until they were ready for an iPhone.
