First, that "report" was posted in 2013.
Second, I have no idea what keeps motivating the OP to conflate this with "hacking". It's not. Commercial news reports are meant to generate a specific negative psychological stimulus in order to sell products, not report facts.
Third, in concept (the fact that that piece of trash dwells on 802-11 devices aside) this is nothing even remotely new. Anybody who can read a schematic and is reasonable with a soldering iron and a breadboard can build a basic tuned 49 MHz FM transmitter and talk through it. It's not difficult. It doesn't take a computer scientist (which is what a hacker is; hackers are NOT criminals) to do this. Get an ARRL handbook and you'll find step-by-step instructions (gasp! oh my god! horror!) to build 6-meter transmitters (shock! awe!) and all you have to do is shift the output frequency down a couple megahertz and cut an antenna accordingly. Just like it's not difficult to modify a baby monitor transmitter to convert the microphone input to a line-in. Some of those devices put out ridiculous amounts of power for what they are, all you need to do is attach a high-gain 1/2-wave antenna and you can easily 0wn the monitor receivers in most of the nurseries within a few miles radius, even more when the ionosphere really gets going. Hell, I was doing that back in the 90s when 46 and 49 MHz monitors (and the occasional obsolete 29 MHz monitor) were all there was!
Fourth, if you really even give half a crap about "security", CHANGE THE DAMN DEFAULT USERNAME AND PASSWORD!!
I mean, duh. Refer to the infographic Bo posted in #30. It isn't rocket science and doesn't take a computer technician with a bunch of obsolete alphabet-soup certifications meant to impress their naive customers. Nine times out of ten these so-called "hacks" are really just people who find devices left out in the open that the user took out of the box and plugged in, never bothering to change the default administrator settings and turn on encryption. They're all over the Internet. If you are a person who does that, then you deserve to be trolled for your ineptitude, since obviously you've asked for it. Stupid is as stupid does.
