Ironically technology has gone the other way, to make the device the “appliance” with the smarts in the streaming service. I can listen in my car via CarPlay, around my house on my Sonos, or walking on my phone.
That was the point I was trying to make to the OP. Your media stays in one place and you simply access it from any other place.
My solution allows me to play music anywhere I am and I can play any of the 90k+ songs I have in my collection. They reside on the cloud or on my home PC, available wherever I have an internet connection. I do use it extensively while riding my bike, in my car or at home.
I do like Sonos which uses wifi instead of BT and is not prone to interference. It is only local however. For home use, there is also DLNA.

I never said I walk around with my phone at all. It's in my waist pack most of the time or it's plugged into the USB hub in my home office to be recharged.
Back in the 1970's and 1980's nothing was "streamed" to a boombox or a home hi-fi stereo. You changed music by changing cassette tapes, records, 8-track cartridges or you changed the radio station. Big heavy clunky recording media prone to wear and damage. But just imagine how many cassette tapes it would take to hold a 20 GB music library today.

until that happens, I will continue to use the clunky method of having a SanDisk player plugged into the IN jack of my boom box: it still beats having to change tapes, records or CDs to change music
look at how many separate pieces of equipment this involves:
1. the SanDisk clip-on MP3 player
2. the 3.5 mm double male plug short cable hooking the player to the IN jack of the boombox
3. the boombox
4. the microSD card in the SanDisk clip-on player
simplicity means reducing the total number of pieces of equipment involved in the operating process: listening to music
the more separate pieces of equipment that are involved in a single activity, the more cumbersome the whole affair becomes
would you like to have to change flashcubes on your digital camera or do you prefer a built-in flash?

I would just like to copy my music media onto one microSD card for each and every mobile/portable/home music playback appliance I have and plug the cards into my appliances and play the card.
The various music appliances are:
1. home stereo receiver
2. boombox
3. clip-on headset player (have been doing that already since 2012)
4. the head unit in my car
This is stupid. What happens when you want to hear it in the car, do you want it integrated into your car stereo too, or your home stereo or someone else's sound system.
And what does Sony have to do with it? LOL?
Sony builds many of the boomboxes and home stereo receivers too. At least they built mine in 2012.
I want to hear my own music on my own music playback appliances. I want it done whereas all I have to do is plug in a
microSD with a copy of my home music library into each and every one of the playback appliances. One card for each appliance I have.
I don't mine burning a number microSD cards with my home library on each of them. The cards are not that expensive these days.
Sony, and nobody else I know of, just hasn't built and marketed any playback appliance as smartly as I would like yet.
Whatever is on the market now leaves more for me to desire.
If you want to listen your stuff on somebody else's sound system, in theory you would just pop your card into their equipment.

FYI - the reason you don’t see a SD reader in a boombox is because it’s cheaper and more flexible for them to support Bluetooth.
Here’s one that supports USB, so you can use a thumb drive to accomplish what you want. One of the reviews mentions it was purchased for a 73 year old who wants to play M3U files. Good luck.

I don't like to constantly carry my phone in my hand like a zombie. I need to use my two hands to do other things while listening to music.

I get in my car. I have to do nothing and my music starts playing. From my phone, to my car.
I have Google Home devices all over my house (which are always on by the way, avoiding that pesky step of... turning a thing on). If I really wanted to I could load all my music into Google Music and then access it anywhere in my house...with my voice. In my car...with my voice.
It's ridiculously easy.
I don't do that because I pay for Spotify. So I can just... talk and listen to anything I want or talk to my phone and listen to any of my music. It's a pretty perfect solution for me.

Real easy. You make them bluetooth compatible. This is easier than you think. Even way older head units can be made BT compatible through FM radio.
Your phone is also bluetooth compatible. All of the devices will "talk" to each other wirelessly.
You turn on your home stereo, you press a button on your phone, they are now connected or will connect automatically if you want them to.
You press play on your phone, you hear it on your stereo.
You can store all of your music on your phone, which you have around all of the time. You don't need an SD card unless... you need it.. and if your phone will support it. You can forget an MP3 player unless you get a Bluetooth MP3 player. They are still available, but that's just another device to deal with.
This is of course if you want your own music that you own, I will not even mention streaming.

That's about as simple as I can make it.
I'm sorry. I refuse to carry my phone around the house while I am at home. I walk around in comfortable clothes, no waist pack at home. Is your phone with you in the shower? Being glued to a phone is just not my bag, dudes.
Often, my phone is plugged in my bedroom to be charged. Yes, my refurbished Moto E4 Tello Android 7.1.1 phone has a microSD slot inside and to my liking, a battery that can actually be replaced by me at home. The back even snaps off. At Walmart my phone is in my waste pack. I still have my SanDisk clipped to my collar to listen to corded headset music in the store. No Bluetooth headset. Another piece of crap that has to be charged periodically. My phone might come out at Walmart once in a blue moon to use the calculator app to compare the unit prices on toilet paper.
