You can put together a relatively inexpensive boom box that produces great sound. The box has to be made of solid wood, to house up to 4 automobile speakers, and amplifier, and an automobile Radio/CD player. You will also need a 12VDC power supply. All of these components can be purchased "used." Some of my coworkers built boomboxes similar to this one:

A little over a year ago my old high quality Sony boombox (Am/Fm radio dual cassette player w equalizer programmable tuning etc... probably from early 90s) finally died. I was searching for the newest high quality boombox (Radio / CD/ Cassette combo as well as new tech USB / MP3).
I have been very pleased with Panasonic RX-55 it was about $160. Has great sound -remarkably good bass - on the radio and with Cd's as well as the few cassettes (yes laugh) I still like to play. I definitely recommend it and it is user friendly.

Bunch of these on ebay used. From descriptions, the radio holds up pretty well, the cd player does not. Hmm, if you have internet, might consider a laptop with cdrom. Internet radio and plug in external speakers or good quality headphone. Laptop speakers kinda suck. Check to see if your desired stations are available to stream online first of course.

If you're talking about a cheap and cheerful $50 player from Best Buy, just pick the one that has the closest set of features to what you want. They'll all use the same optics (whatever's cheapest) and the circuitry and mechanical bits will all have come from the cheapest possible source in China and the things will all have been assembled wherever the labor's cheapest.
That $50 player will probably give you several years of good service, but be careful with it because all the little plastic parts will be undersized and fragile and of course nothing on it's repairable so if anything breaks you throw the whole thing away.

I was thinking about the Sony CD boombox, but there are too many reviews saying the CD player stopped working. I think the CD player is the weakest link in all of these units at this price point.

I've been considering that Panasonic. I even like the cassette capability, because I occasionally come across a cassette version of a great, hard-to-find album.
