It is one of Apple's little annoyances. Or maybe big threats? Boot up of a morning to be greeted with a notice "Updates available". No indication of what the update is. Only two choices: "Install now" and "Remind me later". In desperation, I click "Remind me" hoping to find an escape. No. It wants to know when to remind me.

Next step is to open System Preferences and learn that the update is Big Sur. They were offering to install Big Sur on my computer without telling me what they were installing? I have been through this before. Last time they ended up freezing programs that I tried to open and kept at it until I did update from what I had then. It really was time then. For Big Sur, it is not yet time.

The only way to get rid of it was to say "Remind me later"meaning it will be back tomorrow. Is there no way to say 'No thanks" to these notices?

Unclick "Automaticall keep my Mac..."
Click on Advanced and uncheck items.

Thank you. I am willing but will you please give me a clue as to what those "items" are? I ask because I have a couple of programs (Firefox, for example) deliberately checked for automatic update. Will what I am doing stop all updates?

Thank you.

If you would click INSTALL it will take you to the App store and inform you what it is installing.

Do what Dave said. When you get there you will see what he's talking about re: "items".

You can see what the updates are before allowing any installation.

The Settings: General: Software Updates panel lists whatever is available.

You do not have to allow it to install. But do be very careful with those pop-up notices, because they sometimes switch the positions of the Later or Now or Remind Me options!!!!!

Clicking Remind Me Tomorrow or Remind Me Later (I have gotten both) does not actually force you into doing it “tomorrow.” Just keep putting it off. Bazztards.

I installed one for the iPad but am holding off on the one for a Catalina mini-upgrade, because I read about problems it causes. Am hoping Big Sur will be available and problem-free (HAH).

The issue I am having nowadays with them is that they say updates but do not give me any way to say no thanks. In fact, sometimes, they give no way to close. At present I have one at System Preferences for upgrade to Big Sur with no way to say "no" and be done with it. Then I have one from Apple Store this morning which I cannot even figure out. Looks like an art collage. I also cannot close it out. So, each is hanging on in the Dock. I guess I'll get used to it.

Thanks. hazel
