I'm a history buff and enjoy learning history about the areas I live in and around. I heard a rumor that a girl died during prom at Monterey High School in the basement, in the 70's. Just wondering if its true and if so could I get the whole story

I was in HS there in the 70's and never heard anything about that. Probably a tall tale.

If you are interested in stories or history of the area Dale Welch would be a good fellow to talk to. Also you should be able to check out a copy of a book about Monterey, but I cant remember the name of it or the author. Ill have to get back to you on that.

When I was young I worked in some of the restaraunts in town that were frequented by the "old farts" that would sit around drinking coffee. I heard many good stories from these gentlemen. Just about all of them have passed now, but if you hang out and listen to the older citizens you will be surprised at the history you will learn.

My grandmother shot & killed my grandfather in 1958 (before I was born) in Monterey. I tried to get info on it, but no one would ever talk to me. Emailed Dale Welch - and he said he would try to find out something - but I never heard anything back from him.

I think my best chance died with Jim Heard (distant relative & old H-C employee) - he told me he knew about it, but wanted to tell me in person & not on the phone. He passed shortly after telling me that.

I was in HS in C-ville in the 70s and never heard about what you mention. I think I would have heard if it had happened, as we still had friends in Monterey at the time.

I went to Monterey High in the late 80's and I really can't remember there being a basement. Not saying there wasn't. I do remember in the gym that you would go downstairs to change into gym shoes, etc. Hmmm, don't remember any stories of a death. Not saying it didn't happen but if ANYBODY would know, surely Dale Welch would know. www.hilltopexpress.net is the city newspaper.
