OK someone sent me a PM asking if Cookeville was a religious town. Considering it's a college town, it is strikingly religious.

I took some pictures of a sampling of the churches in Cookeville. I'm sorry if I have left out someone's church, but I wanted to present a general overview of the denominations in town. So, here we go, in alphabetical order so that no one thinks I'm playing favorites:

Baptist

Catholic

Church of Christ

Cumberland Presbyterian

Episcopal

Jehovah's Witnesses (I apologize for the poor lighting)

Jewish congregation (it's not a synagogue, but the Methodist Student Union lets the local Jewish congregation meet in their facilities)

Lutheran

Methodist

Mormon

Nazarene

Presbyterian

Seventh Day Adventist

Unitarian

United Church of Christ

JMT, thank you for posting photos of the churches in Cookeville. My husband and I are considering Cookeville as one of the areas in TN we may want to retire. We have been looking for photos of the Episcopal Church in Cookeville and have not been successful. Thank you for taking those good photos!

Only JMT would not only take the time to take all of those pictures, but then put them in alphabetical order!

Thumbs up Couldn't give you any more rep, but you sure deserve it, JMT.

JMT, you are really something! The pictures are great and what a wonderful diverse representation of so many different faiths.

Thank you, I see my place of worship in Cookeville for our weekend and special event visits to Cookeville.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've been inside the Episcopal church in Cookeville several times, most recently for a funeral. I have to say that the sanctuary is really beautiful, lots of natural wood, stones, stained glass. The building is also in a beautiful location, right down the street from the big Catholic church and in a leafy, historic neighborhood of well-kept, old mansions and bungalows. If you do end up in Cookeville (and that would be a great place to live) I hope you'll enjoy the Episcopal congregation there.

I have to admit that I was surprised to see a Unitarian congregation in Cookeville as well as a United Church of Christ. For those who don't know, the UCC is NOT the same as the Church of Christ. The UCC is the one that endorses gay marriage. I'm not making a statement for or against it, I'm just pointing out that for a small Southern town, Cookeville does have quite a few non-fundamental Christian churches.

And even though the town is predominantly Baptist (over 40 Baptist churches in the county, I believe), I think the most impressive church is First United Methodist. You can't tell from the pic of it that I posted, but the church covers almost 3 entire city blocks downtown and includes an all-Spanish sanctuary as well as Cookeville's only overhead walkway connecting one building to another across the street. I'm not Methodist, but I've always loved that building.

Thanks for letting us know where the Jewish folk meet in the Cookeville area. My daughter in Massachusetts pointed me in the right direction to find this forum. Now I need to find out directions to the meeting place. Help?
