It appears that Crossville will have wine in grocery stores on the November ballet....pretty huge story (the status of Cookeville's petition).....thought for sure we'd see something in the H-C online today. It appears that it may not be on the November ballet in Cookeville. The numbers reported prior to the deadline didn't look promising. I believe having the ability to sell wine would have spurred further interest by Publix to set up shop here.

Perhaps the Election Commission is still certifying signatures.

I don't drink, but I do hope that this is on the November ballot, and I hope it passes. Other than at Kroger and Food City (I assume both Food City locations?) I wonder where else people in Cookeville can go to sign the petition.

I only saw it and sign it at Kroger. Never saw it a Food Lion. But, time for the petitions is over now, they had to be turned in t be certified already.

The article in the H-C on the 17th stated that Food Lion was joining in on the petition campaign....seems a bit late. As well, it stated that 108 pages had been submitted by Cookeville Kroger to the Election Commission...and with 100 pages reviewed...457 signatures had been certified.....I signed one of those pages....each page could hold at least 15 to 20 signatures....that is a lot of wasted signatures.

Seems the campaign wasn't very well put together in Cookeville. Would love to see some news on this....

BREAKING NEWS....at the Red White and Food website (just checked) it has Cookeville with a green star on the map; thus, the referendum will take place in November in Cookeville.

I'm glad that it will be on the ballot. While I'm not a drinker at all, I don't understand why it's ok for grocery stores to sell beer but not wine. Plus, I do like to cook with wine and even cognac from time to time, so it makes sense to be able to buy it in the same store where I can buy my groceries. If I were a resident of Cookeville I would definitely vote to allow grocery stores to sell wine. (And, like you said, maybe this will finally be the tipping point to bring Publix to town.)

UPDATED: Here's the latest from the Herald-Citizen about it:

It passed in Cookeville. 3718 votes (67%) for, 1849 votes (33%) against.

Now come on Publix!
